How well does your Board function?

If your answer is “Not very” or “I’m sorry how would I know?” then you are not alone. Plenty of SMEs have strategic functions that work haltingly if at all.

Here are some red flags to look for…

  • Members of the Board were selected just because they report to you, or they are fellow-founders, or they have worked in the business for donkeys’s years;
  • The Board does not contain diverse experience, talents, points of view and attitudes;
  • Board members have received no training or coaching in the relevant skills and behaviours;
  • You never discuss or assess team performance;
  • You have never taken outside advice on Board performance;
  • Board members do not have a clear idea of the accountabilities and responsibilities of being a Director;
  • The Board spends its time talking about tactical or operational issues not strategic ones;
  • Board membership has remained unchanged while the organisation is now much bigger;
  • You do not have access to concise accurate timely KPIs and associated drilldown reports prior to each Board meeting;
  • You don’t actually have KPIs to discuss;
  • You the leader do not focus your efforts on improving the functioning of the team and individual members;
  • You never get challenged.

If you recognise any of these symptoms then you should do something to improve things if you want to keep your business growing.

Here’s something to start with
